A Modern Musical Adaptation Of Dante’s ‘Inferno’ will be performed in full in Firenze, April 2017.

Robert McGlade

I have been experimenting with different forms of songwriting and music for over 15 years, the past 5 of those collaborating with Gordon Lee as Fathers Of Western Thought. We use improvisational techniques in the hope to capture special once off ‘moments’, that, if repeated, lose all of their quality. This has helped us to write in a very quick and inspirational way. The past 4 years we have focused on musical interpretations of literature, including James Joyce & William Shakespeare.

HIGHLIGHTS

‘Sons Of Western Thought – The Art Of Songwriting’ (2011)

As Fathers Of Western Thought, we wrote, recorded and uploaded a song a day for a year. All 365 songs were displayed as a multimedia exhibition in The Market Studios Dublin in February 2012 and was featured in The Irish Times.

‘Re:Joyce – A Modern Musical Interpretation Of James Joyce’s 4 Major Works’ (2012/2013)

As Fathers Of Western Thought, we wrote modern musical interpretations of Dubliners (1914), A Portrait Of The Artist As A Young Man (1916), Ulysses (1922) & Finnegans Wake (1939). The project was serialized online by The James Joyce Centre every week from February to May 2013. ‘Re:Joyce‘ was performed by Fathers Of Western Thought (with Aine Stapleton & Aaron Mooney) over 4 consecutive nights (13th-16th June, 42 different songs) in 4 different venues during the Bloomsday Festival 2013, in association with The James Joyce Centre. The festival finale culminated in a sold-out double-headliner with Dead Centre’s ‘(S)quark!’ at The New Theatre on Bloomsday, 16th June 2013. ‘Ulysses‘ was performed with a full band (Luque Sweeney, Andy Murray & Jimmy Hagan) in The Workmans Club on 13th June 2014 as part of the Bloomsday Festival 2014 & 19th September 2014 as part of Culture Night 2014.

‘A Modern Musical Interpretation of William Shakespeare’s First Folio’ (2014 – present)

As Fathers Of Western Thought we have ambitions to complete this project over the next 9 years, working on Shakespeare on our time off other projects. To date we have done modern musical interpretations of Othello (2014), King Lear (2015), Romeo & Juliet (2016) & Hamlet (2016).

‘The Endlessnessnessness – A Modern Musical Interpretation Of Sirens Episode In Ulysses’

As Fathers Of Western Thought we were commissioned by The James Joyce Museo Trieste to create a new interpretation of Ulysses based entirely on chapter 11, Sirens. Using Joyce’s ‘fuga per canonem’ style we wrote 8 individual songs with an overture at the beginning mirroring the episode itself. We also experimented with Italian translations of Joyce and incorporated this into the songs. ‘The Endlessnessnessness’ was performed at The Bloomsday Festival in Trieste, Italy on June 19th 2016.

LITERATURE THROUGH MUSIC (2014 – present)

I currently run a business called Literature Through Music, which provides modern musical interpretations of English literature prescribed to the Junior Cert & Leaving Cert in Ireland and GCSE & A Levels in UK, performed as a 60-minutes tutorial within the school itself. I am interested in using language with music, particularly songs, to help students understand difficult texts, without pandering or watering-down the context.
